I. BIG 6 RESEARCH PROCESS

NOTE –TAKINGconsists of the following steps:

  1. Identification of keywords and related words
  2. Skimming and Scanning for specific information
  3. Extracting needed information.

 

CITING SOURCES

  1. Direct Quotations –  are in quotation marks

–          Every note has the citation information – author and page number

–          Paraphrasing is not in quotation marks, but still gives citation information

Example:

“The prospects for development and alleviation of poverty in the Philippines will remain poor unless the country’s spiraling population growth can be brought under control warned a report by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).” The Catholic church is against it, even though the Philippines has the highest growth rate in the region (Easton 1687).

Format:

Author’s last name, first initial. (Publication date). Book title. Additional information. City of publication: Publishing company.

Example:

Encyclopedia & Dictionary

Format:

Author’s last name, first initial. (Date). Title of Article. Title of Encyclopedia (Volume, pages). City of publication: Publishing company.

Examples:

Bergmann, P. G. (1993). Relativity. The new encyclopedia britannica (Vol. 26, pp. 501-508). Chicago: Encyclopedia Britannica.

Merriam-Webster’s collegiate dictionary (10th ed.). (1993). Springfield, MA: Merriam-Webster.

 

Magazine & Newspaper Articles

Format:

Author’s last name, first initial. (Publication date). Article title. Periodical title, volume number(issue number if available), inclusive pages.

Example:

Henry, W. A., III. (1990, April 9). Making the grade in today’s schools.   Time, 135, 28-31Website or Webpage

  

Multimedia

Format:

Title of the material. Type of material.(Copyright date). Place of Publication: Publisher.

Example:

Microsoft Encarta 99.CD-ROM.(1999).USA: Microsoft.

Format:

Author’s name. (Date of publication). Title of article. Title of Periodical, volume number, Retrieved month day, year, from full URL

Example:

Format:
